CE 1253

The Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU and its implementation in Swiss law as Ordinance SR 930.114 describe the essential safety requirements for pressure equipment that manufacturers and distributors must fulfil.

With pressure equipment that is subject to the Swiss Ordinance on the Safety of Pressure Equipment, manufacturers must complete a conformity assessment procedure.
This involves checking whether the pressure equipment meets the requirements of the Ordinance, other frameworks and associated standards. By submitting a conformity declaration, the manufacturer confirms that each item of equipment meets these requirements. The equipment must be labelled accordingly and can then be placed on the market.

The Swiss Ordinance on the Safety of Pressure Equipment distinguishes between the following types of equipment:

  • Containers
  • Pipelines
  • Equipment parts with a safety function (e.g. safety valves, rupture discs)
  • Pressure-bearing equipment parts (e.g. fittings)
  • Assemblies consisting of multiple items of pressure equipment (e.g. industrial refrigerating systems)

When the maximum admissible pressure exceeds the 0.5 bar overpressure threshold, such equipment becomes subject to the Ordinance on the Safety of Pressure Equipment.
The chosen conformity assessment procedure has a significant influence on how much effort is required for the approvals, which therefore affects the costs. The appropriate procedure is determined in consultation with the notified body.
The Swiss Safety Center, market leader in Switzerland and a recognised conformity assessment body (Notified Body EC 1253) for pressure equipment throughout Europe, will support you in implementing the Ordinance as a manufacturer or distributor.
