ISO 9001 - Quality management

ISO 9001 describes the requirements for a quality management system. The requirements are formulated in such a general way that their application is ensured for companies/organisations/institutions in all sectors.

Summary

ISO 9001 describes requirements and does not make regulations. The requirements describe what needs to be fulfilled, but not how this is to be achieved by an organisation. This provides a tried and tested framework for aligning an organisation's processes with its objectives.

ISO 9001 focuses on the impact of activities within the organisation. It is not about writing extensive documentation

The ISO 9001 standard is the most widely used management system in the world. More than 1.1 million organisations are currently certified. In Switzerland, around 15,000, i.e. less than 5% of all companies. Certified organisations want to belong to the elite.

The ISO 9000 family of standards consists of 3 parts:

  • ISO 9000 - Basics and terms
ISO 9001 - Requirements (= basis for certification)
ISO 9004 - sustainable success of an organisation

Other standards belong to the ISO 9000 family of standards.

Development

The first version of ISO 9001 was published in 1987. Further versions were published in 1994, 2000, 2008 and 2015. The 2000 version introduced the management principles and the process-orientated approach. In the 2015 version, the focus was placed on the consideration of risks and opportunities and the concept of competence was expanded to include knowledge management.

The next scheduled review is due in 2026.

The vote in July 2023 on the early revision against waiting until 2026 ended 36 : 25 with 17 abstentions.

An early revision will be carried out.

  • Resilience
  • Supply chain management

  • Knowledge of the organisation
